August 2024 | This country is having a moment, friend!

Aug 6, 2024

Hello friend!

In case you haven't heard, Latin America is having a bit of a renaissance moment. This Condé Nast article summarizes it beautifully:

"For a region so marked by its ancient cultures… it’s a real shift of perspective to look at a map, considering places to go in Central and South America, tilt your head and ask: 'So, what’s new?'"

When you think “south of the border,” you may only think of Mexico – Cabo, Cancun, maybe Tulum or Mexico City. But if you travel a bit farther south, you'll find a treasure trove of hidden corners in Central and South America.

And the isthmus they share is the focus of this newsletter: the fascinating country of Panama 🇵🇦

I've had a long-held interest in Panama. You've got the bustling Panama city, the canal where boats pass through on international travel, a jungle of diverse wildlife. You can even do an over-water villa on private island just off the coast.

Stay curious,

Alyssa

Can you picture yourself sipping coffee as you stroll down the cobblestone streets of Panama City?

Or maybe you need more adrenaline than what the strong coffee provides, and prefer the thrill of surfing in Bocas del Toro, where turquoise waters and sandy beaches create a paradise for surfers of all levels.

In Panama City, immerse yourself in the dynamic blend of old and new. Explore the historic Casco Viejo, with its charming cobblestone streets, colonial architecture, and enchanting plazas. Then, experience the modern marvel of the Panama Canal, an engineering feat that connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The city’s skyline, dotted with sleek skyscrapers, and its bustling nightlife offer a captivating contrast to its rich historical roots.

Nature enthusiasts will love a visit to Volcán Barú National Park. Hike to the summit of Volcán Barú, the highest peak in Panama, for breathtaking panoramic views that stretch from the Pacific Ocean to the Caribbean Sea. The park's diverse ecosystem is home to an array of wildlife, including the resplendent quetzal. The trek through lush forests and past cascading waterfalls is a rewarding adventure for those seeking to connect with nature and experience the raw beauty of Panama.

Wondering when to visit?

Dry season (December to April) offers the best weather for surfing, hiking, and exploring Panama’s diverse landscapes. The warm, sunny days are perfect for beach activities and outdoor adventures.

For a quieter, more serene experience, consider visiting during the green season (May to November). While there might be occasional rain, the lush, vibrant scenery and fewer tourists make this a great time to enjoy the natural beauty of Panama. Plus, coffee harvest season typically begins in October, making it an ideal time for coffee lovers to visit Boquete.

Coffee Lover's Paradise in Boquete

For coffee aficionados, a trip to Boquete is a journey into the heart of Panama's coffee country. Nestled in the highlands, Boquete is renowned for its world-class coffee plantations. Join a coffee tour to learn about the meticulous process from bean to cup, and indulge in tastings that reveal the complex flavors of some of the finest coffee in the world. The cool climate and volcanic soil create the perfect conditions for growing premium coffee, making Boquete a haven for coffee lovers.

Cultural Treasures of the San Blas Islands

The San Blas Islands offer a unique cultural experience with their pristine beaches and rich indigenous heritage. Home to the Guna Yala people, these islands provide an opportunity to explore traditional Guna crafts, including intricate molas (handmade textiles) and beadwork. Visitors can immerse themselves in the local culture, enjoy the stunning natural beauty, and relax on the idyllic beaches, making it a perfect destination for those seeking both cultural enrichment and tropical paradise.

Dive into Adventure at Coiba National Park

Diving enthusiasts will find plenty of action in Coiba National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its exceptional marine biodiversity. Located off the Pacific coast, Coiba offers some of the best diving experiences in the world, with clear waters, coral reefs, and marine life like sharks, rays, and tropical fish. The park's remote location and protected status ensure an unspoiled underwater adventure, making it a must-visit for anyone passionate about diving and marine conservation.

💰 Currency and Payments: Panama uses the US Dollar as its official currency, so there's no need to exchange money if you're coming from the US. ATMs are widely available, but always have some cash on hand for smaller establishments that may not accept credit cards.

👋 Greetings and Social Etiquette: A handshake is the most common greeting in Panama, but in casual settings, a light kiss on the cheek is also common. When addressing locals, a polite "buenos días" (good morning) or "buenas tardes" (good afternoon) is appreciated.

☀️ Stay Hydrated and Sun-Protected: Panama's tropical climate can be hot and humid, so it's important to stay hydrated and wear sunscreen. Insect repellent is also recommended, especially if you're visiting jungle or rural areas to protect against mosquito-borne illnesses.

🚢 As a Viking Certified Expert, I was very excited to help a client plan and book a 14-day Viking ocean cruise that will port in Norway, the Netherlands, Belgium, England, France, Portugal, and end in Spain. Viking cruises are smaller and a little more sophisticated than the typical cruise. They offer river, ocean, and expedition sailings, with a ton of unique experiences built in.

⛵I've been working with a solo adventurist to plan a trip to Croatia! He'll spend a week visiting Split, Hvar, and Dubrovnik. It'll be his first time out of the country, and I'm so excited for his journey!

⛰️ Another client is taking a big birthday celebration trip — a 9-day cruise and land tour in Alaska. It's a family trip, so it's been fun to explore a lot of different options and find that sweet spot of experiences that everyone will love.
